some here seem to think it's reasonable for a bank to charge £35 for not payng a direct debit, and another £35 for writing to tell the customer that it wasn't paid. I know someone who this happened to, £70 charges for being just a few pounds over their overdraft. Of course, this took them over their budget the next month and they ended up paying hundreds of pounds over several months. Do you honestly think it's fair for a simple £20 mistake to incurr £100s in recurring charges?

why do people think it would be 'the government' paying people to recycle? my kids youth club regularly raises money by recycling aluminium drinks cans, a carrier bag full of squashed cans is worth about £5 scrap - ok, it's not a fortune, but they see it as pretty much 'free money'. why not re-introduce things like the old style deposit on glass bottles? plenty of people would round them all up if they were worth 5p or 10p each

It is impossible for someone to take your fingerprint or DNA out of a computer and put it in a place you were not present like some kind of copy and paste job....that only happens in James Bond movies. Allan, Paisley ~~~~~~~~~~ While that is certainly true, how hard would it be to plant DNA from a toothbrush, hairbrush or cigarette end? Or do you think your DNA is only in bodily fluids? If I was about to commit a crime I'd be looking for stuff like that to take with me.

Hitler would have loved a DNA database would have made rounding up everyone he didn't approve of so much easier don't imagine that couldn't happen again

To those who say "nothing to hide, nothing to fear" ~ you're quite happy for the government to pass this information on to say life insurance companies? or for it to be used to determine mortgage applications? etc - sorry Mr Smith, your insurance will be quadrupled from now on, since your DNA says you have a good chance of dying early - and, before you say they wouldn't, just think about how many people they have sold the DVLA information to

forget for a moment how most of us feel about the current government. in recent elections parties like the BNP have been gaining favour. although it is unlikely, it is not impossible that one day we might have a government run by the BNP or someone like them how happy would you be to have someone like that in charge of a nationwide DNA database? would you still want to be on it?

A huge part of the problem is the paperwork. Have you tried reporting a crime? The forms ask all sorts of questions that bear no relation to the crime - for example; why do they need to know the names and dates of birth of everyone who lives in my house? A much better solution would be to re-think the whole police service, a top-to-bottom full reorganisation.

so many here don't have the slightest clue parental responsibility? is that the only knee-jerk reaction you have? do you not know that kids have net access at school? do you not know that kids are allowed to use computers in libraries? do you not know that most modern mobile phones have wireless net access built right in? do you not know just how many free wireless access places there already are in most towns? do you not know how many unsecured private networks are accessible?

why the hell are parents giving young children unsupervised internet access anyway? The Colonel, Oxford ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ My kids have net access in school and at the local library, how am I supposed to supervise that? the only thing I can do is to rty and educate them about the dangers and hope they are responsible.

When Thatcher stepped in, unemployment tripled. The number of people on benefits shot up. Cosmo Entley ~~~~~~~~~~ All true, and exactly what she said would happen before she was elected. She promised to tame the unions and we belived her - and she actually did what she said she would do - how many politicians today can claim the same? Margaret Thatcher is definatly one of the most inspiring women of the 20th century - absolutly no doubt.

yes, it is right to apologise for the recent past, some of the people who were lied to and shipped abroad are still alive and an apology is the very least they should get.

I went to a pub in Chepstow were everyone was speaking English when I walked in but switched to Welsh as soon as I spoke. I didn't feel welcome and soon left - as (I suspect) was their hope
