Should bloggers behave responsibly?

The controversial ex-spin doctor at the centre of a row over e-mails smearing senior Conservatives has quit as editor of the LabourList blog. What sort of responsibility should bloggers have?

Derek Draper said he regretted what had happened and wished he had condemned the smear plan from the start.

Mr Draper set up LabourList as a rival to Tory blogs but he also planned to launch a separate gossip site, Red Rag.

Downing Street aide Damian McBride was forced to quit after e-mails about Red Rag were leaked to the press.

When it comes to political blogging is news and opinion more valuable than gossip? How responsible should bloggers be? Do you supplement your political news with blogs? Has the credibility of this blog been damaged any more than the Labour Party in this situation?

These site are only in existence to satify the needs of the die hard politico's, us mere mortals dont need or read them so any lies, untruths, gossip they spout is pretty pointless.

Bloggers can say what they like! it is up to the reader to make of it what they will. Bloggers do behave responsibly, more so than the main stream media as far as I can make out. Nobody has to read their blogs if they don't like them, or trust them. QED. JD.

The relationship between the government and the press has become far too cosy, to the extent that the public is now having the wool pulled over its eyes from all sides.

If political bloggers can break this conspiracy with genuine insight, investigation and analysis then I want more of it.

If it wasn't for bloggers the British people would be left with nothing but the half truths, opinions & outright lies peddled by the mainstream British media.

The BBC are too scared of the government to be a reliable source of political news while the tabloids are full of fear & hate filled opinion dressed up as news.

There's been many stories reported recently that would never have seen the light of day if it weren't for bloggers reporting them on their sites first.

As far as I know, bloggers are not exempt from the law of libel although I appreciate that it can be very difficult and costly, if not impossible, to take out legal action against someone hiding behind an anonymous blog.

The same rules apply online as in print media. If you want people to take you seriously, behave in a responsible manner.

Sigh. There's something called Libel, it's a law. If you libel someone you can be taken to court and the libelled person claim compensation. This law applies to any form of publication including blogs. A few good court cases and bloggers will learn responsibility.

Everyone should behave responsibly. I'm rather disturbed that someone thought it necessary to even frame a question in this way.

Leave the bloggers alone. After Hutton gagged the BBC we have few places left to find out the truth of what's going on in the world. The great thing about bloggers is that there are too many of them for the government to silence them all. If the price we pay is that the government uses the same tool then so be it. We can spot their lies from a mile away, pretty easy really, if it comes from this government or their supporters it's probably not true. The internet is our last defence leave it alone

Blogging is just an excuse to spout tedious drivel that most people ignore anyway. Does anyone actually care what bloggers really think?

This is a free speech issue, and common sense tells us that deliberate lies and unsupported assertions must always be punished, BUT, evidence-based statements and claims must always be defended. It is only wrong to shout 'fire' in a crowded cinema if you know that there isn't a fire. Today's politics has made truth take second place to feelings of offense. Belief in free speech must be brought back into fashion before we end up with political truth replacing evidence-based truth.

Yes, particularly blogs ment to be read by a large audience. But this episode has shown to the wide public just how low Nu Labour has sunk, no morals, no end to ripping us taxpayers off - the list is endless. This is all from an un elected Scottish PM. Time to go Gordon. Head north and try ripping your own countrymen off.

Bloggers are basically presenting a one sided, biased and in most cases influenced opinion with the soul purpose of getting others to believe that that which they are presenting is the truth. Bloggers do not operate in the interest of the many; but as is often the case,in the interest of the few.
Responsible action implies 100% honesty! How many bloggers can hold their hands up and say they are truly honest?

"It's disproportionally heavy when it's bad news about the Tories, incredibly lightweight when it's bad news about Labour. News attacking Tories runs for days, news attacking Labour often never gets mentioned at all."

Which country do you live in ?

Many feel the reverse is true with lightweight investigation of Tory actions. Where is the Tories expense list?

Nobody investigated who leaked the emails in the RedRag story which was clearly done to benefit the Tories who then cried foul.
