Would you give up your car for a bicycle?

Workers in Nigeria are finding themselves in a jam.

They are having to spend up to six hours queuing for fuel for their cars; and even when they do get fuel, they can spend all day going no where thanks to gridlocked traffic.

Cars may be a status symbol, but are they actually serving us well? Given the economic downturn and environmental issues such as climate change and pollution, is it time for bicycles to make a return?

Are bicycles a viable option in our towns and cities? Would you consider riding a bike to work or do you think it is only for a certain class of people? Send us your views.

this is a very sad event for nigerians suffering to get fuel.the leaders are not affected by this ugly situation, some marketers make money from scarcity.i think nigeria need deliverance from GOD.and also the help of foreing expert to plan nigeria and put nigeria in a place he suppose to be.poverty and fustration are driving youth out of their father land all because of greedy leaders.

I will rather not swap my car for a bike, better still I get the two. When the traffic gets too high, I pick out my bike and ride out to achieve my objectives, and when the traffic goes down i will come get the car. I can't afford to wait for the traffic to break off till i move. So I'll advice Nigerians with cars to get a bike alongside and make a way out when the situation closes the existing ways. Thanks

I freed myself of my car in 1981. Walking/cycling is freedom. Sitting in a car in a traffic jam is slavery.

Bicycle riding gives exercise and makes you healthy, environmentally friendly. If the infrastructure is in place I would prefer riding a bicycle when going to work to driving a car. Having witnessed horrible bicycle accident victims by motorist on the road makes it a taboo for me to hide a bicycle going to work. The pollution, traffic congestion, repairs & maintenance stress associated with daily movement to work places bicycle are economically viable in recession were budgets are overstretch

Only if there is a bicycle lane to make sure peddlers are safe. Otherwise I prefer the horse and buggy back on the street. Their by-product is perfect for my hedge and flowers not to mention fresh produce fertilization.

As I live in a mountainous region, it would make things a bit difficult, however, if all the "greens etc" promise never again to use a vehicle that uses petrol etc, yes I would. I find that those who advocate this idea of transport, travel the world promoting the idea, and surprise surprise, they use aircraft . what is their carbon footprint just to prove a point. All the hot air they spout must be adding to the greenhouse effect of global warming -which in itself is a fallacy, a PC concept!

If we all ditched our cars and took to the cycle, you could bet your home on Labour cynically imposing a bicycle tax. Bikes with stabilisers ie 4-wheel drives, would take the brunt.

Nigerians are materialistic set of people who will be ashamed to ride a bike to the office, party, or any social gathering. Nigerians are used to suffering and can queue for hours at fuel stations. Nigerian government has no human face. How can a country be suffering in the midst of plenty. An oil producing nation importing fuel. THAT TELLS U CORRUPTION IS AT LARGE. What a shame. Bike not ideal if u don't want to get knocked down.

Would you give up your car for a bicycle?

Only if I lived where there are no hills!

No, on second thoughts, I wouldn't even then.

Car in the town for work and shopping. Bike for pleasure in the country. I cannot carry carry a week's shopping on a bike, and I am not particularly suicidal - (some drivers simply have a blind spot for cyclists).

DOES ANYONE THESE DAYS LIVE WITHIN CYCLING DISTANCE FROM WORK ANYMORE. I TRAVEL THE UK EXTENSIVELY WITH MY WORK, AND LOOKING AT THE AMOUNT OF TRAFFIC ON ALL CLASSES OF ROAD DURING THE RUSH HOURS I'D SAY MOST PEOPLE WORK AND LIVE IN DIFFERENT TOWNS. BICYCLES CANNOT BE A VIABLE OPTION UNTIL THIS TREND IS REVERSED.

Absolutely not !! Only sensitive caring people ride bikes. Give me a Humvee any day; I'll even empty the ash tray in the gutter.

BBC, this in an interesting topic, not only having a car prefering to a bicycle but also, in what circumstances are we talking about? Well, in some countries, example in parts of the DRC, I bet you, at certain areas, no body will go for a car because of the "almost" inaccessibility of the roads that links towns together either for work or other business related. I think it depends on the location and that would determine what to go for - hope all will be okay one day, certainly, yes

The economy is hitting hard, to use a bicycle means more human energy is required to go to work and our diet is not that good. I say we will be stressed more. Efficiency will come down. Give up a car ride to work? No I don't think so.

It's a good excercise too! It is better to ride a bike than spending hours at the gas station. Time is precious to me. If more and more people ride bikes, it will mean a loss of revenue for the government in terms of sale of petroleum products. It is sad that Nigerians are suffering in the midst of plenty.
