What should the US do with Guantanamo inmates?

Guantanamo Bay is a "misguided experiment" and a "mess" that must be cleaned up, US President Barack Obama has said. Do you agree with him?

In a major speech on Thursday, Mr Obama said the US prison camp had weakened national security and served as a rallying call for enemies, but he still intended to close it by January 2010.

The US Senate has voted against funding President Obama's plans to close Guantanamo and transfer its 240 detainees.

Meanwhile, al-Qaeda suspect Ahmed Ghailani is to become the first Guantanamo inmate to be tried in a US civilian court. He will stand trial in New York over charges relating to the 1998 US embassy bombings in East Africa.

How do you think President Obama should handle Guantanamo Bay and its inmates? What do you think would be in the best interests of US national security? What did you think of the president's speech?

Return Guantanamo Bay back to Cuba. America's problem then becomes Cuba's problem. A fair exchange for the return of their territory.

Obama thinks the entire USA is a "misguided experiment" and particularly the Constitution is a "mess" that must be cleaned up.

He said in front of God and the whole world he thought the Constitution was too inconveniently restrictive of government power. Dur???
And what was God and the whole world's answer to that alarm bell? Well we havent heard from God yet, but the world pretty much summed it up with, "zzzzzzz".

But noo when it comes to terrorists, government should show restraint.

Get Disney sponsorship, install some HUGE rollercoasters there, and let the inmates (replete in their dashing orange jumpsuits) serve slushies and hot dogs to fat english speaking tourists, while charging da Big Bucks for entry. I am willing to accept offers from the corporate machine to take on my original idea.

Why not privatize it and deregulate it?

Alex Shey, Orlando, United States

That treaty signed back in 1903, forbids private businesses in the Base area. Before we say anything, these cafes, McDonalds, Wendy's and so are franchises belonging to the US Navy.

Sorry to disapoint anyone, but privatisations do not happen at Guantanamo.

Why not make Guantanamo Bay the official residence for the people who created it?

I believe the First President og Cuba is ceased to be. The same is to be said of Roosevelt Senior.

The obvious course of action is for Guantanamo inmates to be treated as the US would expect its servicemen and citizens to be treated when detained abroad - no waterboarding and the like - and fair trials in US courts of law.

Fair trials according to US Law.

Keep Guantanamo Bay as a testament to World's strongest abusing Power. "You're either with us or Against us" leaves no room for Right or Wrong, cornerstones of Democracy.

Prevailing notion that some are entitled to a Higher standard of Justice is exactly what Feeds Radicalism.

It's time to close Guantanamo for ever. I don't manage to explain myself why it exists yet.

For all those whining about the "innocent" inmates at Guantanimo Bay, a study found that half of these innocents went back to fighting in Afghanistan or Pakistan when they were released. And I've noticed that no country is offering to takle these "innocents" when they are released.

Guantanmo should exist...im trying to figure out what gives any non US citizen the right to speak to US policy. Oh yeah...i remember now...the reason why most of you have the right is because of the freedom provided to you by US men and women who fought by your country men to ensure your freedom to speak out. Obama"s coke and a smile diplomacy and his need to hold hands singing kumbaya with Europe only makes this world a more dangerous place.

Guantanamo is a stain on the democracy, where people innocent and guilty have been locked up and tortured, without a trail.

Guantanamo is a common factor between Nazi Germany and democratic America

Two current parts to the "misguided experiment," both caused by the creators, Bush and Cheney. Many inmates cannot be repatriated, and they deserve justice as in "innocent until proven guilty." For those who cannot be repatriated and are innocent, the U.S. needs to set up a program such as Saudi Arabia has and prisoners who complete the program and cannot be repatriated should be allotted parcels of land and the means to profit from them (stock, machinery) from the holdings of Bush and Cheney.

the policy itself has been very complicated because of on going consequences of Guanta Bay. It's difficult for Presedent Obama as well. But, i think if Guanta Bay is not closed, there will be serious consequences that US will become a target for terrorists. Terrorists will also become very powerful and strong. People need to be treated fairly to prevent them from doing bad things.

Sure, if I am innocent and have been jailed 6 years even without tor. When I leave the prison, I will against the goverment not "only" by law! (Luckly I am not ^_^)
How could you know the prisoners in G bay won't revenge when they have been freed?
I think only Jesus could forgive this kind and friendly experiment, which he may thought it is a moral test by his father.
But how many Jesuses are experiment in Guantanamo?
