Has China changed after Tiananmen?

China has boosted security in Beijing's Tiananmen Square, ahead of the anniversary of the killings in 1989. How has China changed since this event?

The United States Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, has urged China to publicly account for those killed during the bloody suppression of the protests.

Many dissidents say they have been told to leave Beijing or are confined to their homes. Some journalists say they have been turned away from the site and the authorities are also blocking social networking sites such as Twitter and Flickr.

Hundreds, possibly thousands, of people died in the Tiananmen crackdown 20 years ago.

What has changed in China since the Tiananmen protests? What do they mean to the younger generation? Will you be marking the anniversary? Are you planning to travel to Beijing? Were you there 20 years ago?

Significantly what has changed since 1989 is computer use and the adoption of something called deep packet inspection for control of internet use. The ability of governments and in fact corporations to be able to inspect content of communications enables control not just in places like China but the West as well.

Yes because it is easier for people in China to access information today. The government can't stop that. Consequently, people learn to tell apart propaganda as soon as they see one, which is why they reject western criticisms.

Isn't it strange that you are the only person from China posting here.
You say that people in China know what propaganda is when they see it. Obviously, you don't.
China should be mindful of what others think because its economy is built on trade.

China has changed. As a businesman trading with China Im impressed with the reforms carried out there and work-ethic of the hard-working Chinese people. Westerners criticising China (in general and on HYS) are living on another planet - the West has lost all moral authority after Iraq and Afganistan; you're not in a position to lecture others on human rights whilst you bomb wedding parties; no one cares what you say anymore. Liberal democracy isnt the only/best model out there - dont interfere!

China has a long history of communism. There is no chance to change their view for this past incident. It was a brutal activity no doubt about it But true fact is that China going to becoming a super economic power in the world ,that's why they can't tolerate any rebellious activity in side the country which make their country unrest. They have showed how much they can be rude to eliminate the freedom seeker Tibbet people.

" I would say no it is still a communist country who violates the human rights of its citizens and visitors."

Sylvia Martinez, Los Angeles, United States

Take a look at your own country; a supposed 'democracy'. People's human rights are violated every day in the U.S simply on the basis of class and race. Communism has nothing to do with it. Enough with the hypocrisy.
JS, Tokyo

You ain't seen NOTHIN yet. The race card is now better currency than the dollar. Whacism is all the rage!

One must remember that Chinese are genetic capitalists!
Look at any Chinese who have emigrated in past years or managed to recently - they work - whole families work, work, work!

Some countries like Malaysia are run by ethnic Chinese bankers behind a thin veneer of local politicians. Wherever they have the freedom to work and produce (for themselves and their own profit) they are unexcelled at it! Slowly but surely the Chinese government is changing (Shanghai!) and soon it will "burst out"!

I hate to say this in view of other failings of the Chinese system - but that country does have one policy that practically no other country has "One child per family" against much internal protest from people used to children providing for their old age.

Rather than save the children and feed the chilren - please WORLD - stop having too many for this poor planet to nourish and still keep it's diversity.. Watch the movie "Home" on internet - and draw your conclusions - before it's too late!

".....But one thing I am sure about is that our government only does what is good for its people.

Jade Wood, Wenzhou, China "

I think you'll find that they only do what's good for members of the government.
You can't criticize your government yet I can criticize mine without fear or arrest.
If I don't want the communist party in power I and my fellow countrymen can choose not to have them. We can choose something else. What about you?
Web sites for me are never blocked yet often for you.

"Yes China has changed.Since its horrific crushing of humanity at Tianeman Square .
China has become the manufacturing base for almost every democratic Western country on Earth.
I can imagine that they get the message.

Yes, and now everyone can make their own statement by checking every item in a store before they purchase it. Look for the "Made in China" label and put it back on the shelf!! ( I do!)

Most striking is that China's 56 Ethnic Cultures share National Pride,a goal worth striving for.

No China has not changed. They have just got smarter and by securing mining and oil rights along with becomming a major manufacturing gaint they will eventually be in a position to rule us all and re-write history by erasing Tiananmen from the books.

The Chinese Government, like all those totalitarian regimes is still very immature since criticism of policy from outsiders is perceived as an embarrassment or loss of face that is subsequently expressed as "interference" in their internal affairs. This is a key weakness of most single party, developing nations. It is okay for them to criticise the West as "Imperialists" but it is anathema to point out obvious faults in their system. History has shown that pluralism will ultimately prevail.

Mary Gravitt, you need to live in China for a while. It will either show you how lucky you are to live in America and you will be embarrassed enough to not take your citizenship for granted or you will like it well enough to stay. A Win/Win situation.
