Is Britain entering a new political age?

Labour has suffered its worst post-war election result, beaten into third place by UKIP in the European Parliament elections. What does the future hold for British politics?

The Tories came first, but failed to increase their total share significantly, while the BNP gained seats for the first time at national elections.

The Lib Dems saw their share of the vote shrink slightly, while in the South-East and South-West, the Green Party beat Labour into fifth place.

However, only 34% of the British electorate turned out to vote - one of the lowest turnouts in recent times.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown is looking electoral reform and is set to announce plans to examine a new system of voting MPs to the House of Commons.

Do the European election results signal a true shift in British national politics? Or does the low turnout undermine their importance? What are your predictions for the future of British politics?

Gordon Brown makes announcement about policy changes, and one of five things will happen 1 it will be forgotten (general election), 2 it will be referred to a committee (MP expenses), 3 it will be too complicated for the electorate (EU referendum), 4 it is too intrusive into private concerns of MPs ( Transparency, MP expenses and conflict of interest) or 5 it will be introduced in the next parliament (anything unpopular). Oh and legalise BNP bashing for UAF facist thugs. Think i'll emigrate.

Kitty - Scots voted for the SNP - English voted for the BNP.....both party's seek a lot more independance from Brussels and have self-serving manifestos.

Danny Walker, London

You must distinguish between small scale nationalism (generally good), and large scale far-right nationalism - Scotland was never a great power but Britain effectively ruled the world for hundreds of years (hence no need for British nationalism). And for the record, the SNP is a centrist pro-Europe party.

How about some fresh thinking in our politics?

Let the electorate go to polls each month, with three votes.
1st vote. To find out what issue is top of OUR agenda
2nd vote. To vote on proposals put forward to tackle previous months top issue
3rd vote. Unfinished business, when 2nd vote unressolved

That would be more like democracy. That would re-engage with the electorate. That would give us the chance to have our say. That would have allowed us to give our vote of no confidence.

" Griffin is not the first politician to be 'egged' - Prescott and Major also had this happened "

I don't remember the Major incident, but Prescott lashed out like the thug he is, assaulting the egg-thrower. Griffin, au contraire, acted in a restrained manner, left the scene and allowed the legitimate forces of law to do their job. Not bad for a "racist, homophobic yob" as distinct from a wonderful, caring, NuLiebour minister of nothing at all, eh?

It seems to me that Britain is entering a new political age - a terrifying one in which it is deemed acceptable by many to vote for a fascist, racist, homophobic,Nazi-esque party. Everyone who voted for them just remember what happened in Nazi Germany. The only good thing that could come out of that was that we can learn from it - but we appear to be repeating those mistakes.

Everyone who voted for BNP, just imagine what a terrifying reality it would be if they were in power. Shame on you.

Peter Mandelson, Glenys Kinnock, Alan Sugar, 'elevated' to the House of Lords. 'Gorbals Mick' won't be far behind them. Labour have devalued our political system and our country. Please let us have an election.

No just a protest vote against the goverment getting blamed for the expences thing ,an every thing eles.

But the good news for the goverment is it can only get better,

And i would say the torys have peaked at the expence of labour.
In a real election i can see labour doing ok,thats if people vote on policys,as the torys dont like talking about policys thats why Mr Cameron can only attack Mr Brown on a personal level which is childish really, get some real issues DC and have a man to man .

Yes, the electorate have woken up, they've been gagged for too long. All the parties, with the exception of UKIP and the BNP have sold our nation down the river with their political correctness. None of the main parties listen to the public but above all labour the party of second raters. My view is that not only have they had their noses in the trough with expenses, with what has been going on with immigration, there's been a lot of brown envelopes being passed around to M.P's for deals done.

"Nice to see that a load of protesters won't allow a democratically elected politician like Nick Griffin even speak. Now that is what I call fascism.

harry bristol, portsmouth"

What about the pro-fox hunting group that invaded the House of Commons a few years back to attempt to thwart the elected government from debating legislation that implemented a manifesto commitment? They were clearly acting both undemocratically and criminally in pursuit of a goal. Were you as outraged by them?

????????????? what ?????????????

In the past months revelations & scandals, I don't remember anyone making serious complaints about our voting system!
OK I'd like to see something more proportionate, but this has not been the issue of late.

Now, THIS is Brown's big reform?

Look over here,
look over here.
No look at this hand,
over here.
Are you watching?

Suckers!

Do you still think he's listening, making the changes needed, or do you think he's being a typical politician?

the BNP CARE about Britain. And dont want us to be flooded, by people from abroad who do NOTHING for the country.

Andrew, Ashton

Are you saying that indigenous British aren't capable of doing nothing for their country, that they would never commit benefit fraud, that they would never take sickies?

Are you saying that hard work is only the result of patriotism? What about greed, individualism and ambition? How would you explain the actions of the much maligned bankers and M.P.s?

We also need the House of Lords changed into an Elected Chamber. There are too many unelected people running the country.

[Jobrite], Worthing

I'm not convinced that I want a copy of the Commons in the Lords being behoven to party managers. Its the Lords that has throw some of ZanuLabour's more repressive laws out.

The green shoots are surfaceing for GB.
As the economy cogs begin to move i think GB,s rating has to increase who eles are we going to thank for getting us out of the crisis quickly, if the torys had been in power you would still be looking at at least 18 months more

The BNP have got 2 seats in the EU parliament for one reason.

The government does not listen. We have been told that immigration is good for the economy, effectively cheap labour when times are good.

The worry comes when times are not so good, when the majority of children in your childrens class do not have english as a first language, when all over the news there are stories of illegal immigrants being responsible for horrible crimes.

This country is great, good people should be welcome
