Should more be done about steroid use?

The number of young people taking steroids may have doubled in five years, says one of the government's top drug advisers.

Professor Les Iversen thinks an explosion in websites selling the muscle-building drug has made it far easier to get hold of.

He thinks statistics may seriously underestimate the number of young men abusing steroids, and that the figure could be four times more than previously thought, with as many as 250,000 people taking them regularly.

"The great majority of users don't even realise they're taking an illegal substance," he said.

Do you have any experience with steroids? Do you know people who take them? Are they easily available?

I really do not understand why anyone wants to take steroids. Isn't improving your body more satisfying when you've done the work for yourself?

Wanting to take steroids seems quite sad to me and an indication of very low self-esteem.

I've been doing weight training for 7 years heavy weight training up to 100kg 100% of my body weight. I have 45-50cm biceps at present from an all natural regime and balanced diet.

I used to overtrain and make myself ill but pills are no quick fix solution if you want a good body.

I've never taken steroids and I never will. If you find you can't do it without it's not worth bothering.

Its a funny old world, on one hand its quite acceptable to under go serious medical, albeit cosmetic surgery to change ones appearance, or take hormones to change sex, and the media will make a programme about you. But on the other hand should you take anabolic steroids & work you backside off in the gym that same media will demonise you, call you narcissistic or insecure,or brand you a cheat even if your not a competative athelete.education is the answer to steroid abuse, not more legislation.

the general public need to be educated in anabolic steroids before commenting - and users need to be educated before use.
i personally blame the media not the masses for mis-information - spoon feeding people sensationalist nonsense in order to sell papers.look at the amount of deaths from steroids compared to alcohol and smoking. what more do people need to know?
legality and social acceptance through tradition - have NO bearing on how damaging a substance is. its quite sad.

I've never used roids but I have trained in the past including with weights (until I became ill) and I have known people who've used roids. What gets me is that I’ve known lads who were fairly calm, pleasant, individuals before using roids who then went on to become quite angry and aggressive individuals after taking them. I think given the increased use of them among young people it does raise some worrying questions about why so many young people feel the need to use them.

I suspect that many of the Boys use more than they would like you to know about in the way of A. Steroids.
This is naturally combined with a good deal of physical strength / body building.

I further suspect that this leads to (there may be factors) changes in mentality, an increase in "brittle thinking" and an intolerance to complexity and "grey states" and a tendency to paranoia.
I think it may be behind some seriously unfortunate behaviour.

think people should really look into things before going down the steroid use stage be in the right state of mind , be on a good diet , and get great advice from athletes that do use , and yes i said athletes cause that what we are us body builders see it not a sport to us it a way of life we would not take steroids if we though or new for fact that they harm us or are all bad .after all we worship our bodys the media need to ;look at this more and not jump on the big bad steroids thing

People using steriods, either for low self esteem, aethetics or so they are competitive, do so for a reason making them ilegal will change nothing. A wider education is need so that people now the correct way to deal with them. For example i have come across so many people who think that pumping as much into them will make them bigger when in fact your body can only use so much the rest will just hang around in your blood stream intoxicating the liver ect. This is the course of the side effects

I'm a qualified nurse and therapist and the only rage i've seen professionally was nothing to do with steroid use. Angry people are angry almost always because of other issues; steroids will not make them change personality, alcohol and drugs are a far bigger issue and have proven time and again that they affect human behaviour far more than sensible well researched use of steroids. i know a lot of body builders and they are some of the nicest and most helpful community of people i know

I think taking steroids and steroid abuse are two different things. Sure there are individuals who are probably more sensitive to these things but ultimately I think its probably true to say that they are as safe as any other prescription drug.

They legalize alchohol which is a fact that it causes liver cyrossis , but then warn people that steroids are unhealthy what is this world coming to...

its up to the users not anyone elses, its our health not theres.........

I see steroids being taken all the time in my local gym, I know friends that take them and i'm sure it's safe to say they are way to easy to get hold of.

Im a natural trainer with 8 years experience. Dont have anything against them. Most folk who use them live heathier lives than those who smoke binge drink ect. The only thing i hate about them is the wee idiots who use them after 6 months training and use it as a miracle drug, even tho there diet sucks.
IN bodybuilding diet is the most important , folowed by rest and trianing. Get these correct b4 u use them.

This has been blown out of all proportion.
There are far more deaths from drug abuse, alcohol, and smoking.but nothing is done about them.
As for Nicks comments on breast tissue, and shrinkage in manhood size, well he hasnt done his research.
Its to easy to say that they will kill you , anything will kill you if you ABUSE it , taken responsibly.they cause no harm whatsover.
People RESEARCH before you comment.

I am amazed at how the government and media have managed to demonize anabolic steroids as heart attack inducing, penis shrinking teen killers. There is so little evidence that correct use of anabolic steroids has any long term negative health issues. The only reason we even here about these drugs in the media and drug awareness campaigns is because of the lack of knowledge the general population has about them. Do your research and base your own opinions on facts.
