What have Iran protests achieved?

US President Barack Obama has strongly condemned the "unjust actions" of Iran in clamping down on election protests.

President Obama said he respected Iran's sovereignty and it was "patently false" of Iran to say the West was fomenting the unrest.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon had called on Iran to respect the "will of its people" after the disputed presidential poll but Tehran accused him of "meddling".

Earlier, the opposition was told by Iran's Guardian Council the 12 June election would not be annulled.

The ruling was reported by state television on Tuesday.

Are you in Iran? Have you gone to any protests? What can the protests achieve? Who did you vote for? What message does the result send out to the international community?

The issue with Iranians at the moment is not whether the British or Americans trying to take over their society. The people in Iran have been under oppression for too long. The system is nearing its life's span. Power belongs to the Iranians, not Ayatollah, Guardian Council or Ahmadinejah. Even If the present attempt to maintain the status quo succeeds, in not too far future, the oppressive system in place in Iran will soon come to an end and more people friendly system will be in place.

In my opinion, President Ahmadinejad won the elections in Iran. However, even in the US, election results or irregularities are challenged in the courts (Al Gore versus Bush - 2000 Elections). I believe this to be an attempt to destabilise Iran from inside. This happened in many other countries. Since when the financially bankrupt powers cared about elections and freedom? Don't you remember Mossadegh? They want another servant. This simply won't happen! Iranians are smart enough to understand.

I would like to also congratulate our brave and proud footballers for making a statement with their green armbands. I dont think in these days of obscene financial tarnsfers between clubs for players there are many who would risk a hell of a lot to support a political cause.

My father runs a university in Iran and having spoken to him he informed me of the depression that has engulfed the lives of students whom simply do not see a brighter future.

To assume that the Iranian people would not think something amiss at the following:

*Websites being shut down
*Armed guards outside the voting sites
*Paper ballots being counted in only 4 hours
*Statistically improbable vote counts

OR to say that the only way the Iranians can see something like that happening is the US/UK's fault GROSSLY underestimates and insults the intelligence of the Iranian people.

Stop implying the Iranians have no mind of their of their own.

Britain should be proud that the UK & the BBC are in the forefront of Iran's democracy movement….. The world needs to stop trade with Iran. The regime there should be isolated the same way the apartheid regime in South Africa was. But of course, they didn't have oil.

Iran has oil. The proud UK/US should bring Iraqi style democracy by shock and awe and thousands of Nedas!!!!!!!!!

nothing....yet...
Freedom, despite what many may think, is NOT free. The price is often very, very high. The Iranian people are at a difficult crossroad. If they let slip by this opportunity to escape the yoke of Islamic oppression, it may not come again for many years. Stand and shout and be counted NOW - even if it means your own death. You may save your children in the process...

What is the fuss all about? Why the crocodile tears.

The US orchestrated the 1953 coup to topple Iran’s
democratically elected govt, and install the compliant shah in power. They forced PM Mossadegh, a man who cared as much for his country as he did for the rule of law and democracy, to spend the rest of his life under house arrest. The US gave to the Iranians the corrupt regime of the shah and his savage secret police.
Iranians know they once had a democracy until the US took it away.

Odd set of comments from this fellow Jerry from Cranberry. Almost as though he were a professional propagandist, attempting to turn the Neda incident to the Regime's advantage. Sets up the unfounded straw that Iran is under threat of imminent attack from US and then blames US for Iranian deaths. Quite neat; worthy of Joseph Goebbels really.

The BBC ought to investigate source to determine if it is an assumed identity, or just one of tyranny's fellow travelers.

The protests have actually strengthened the hardliners. When the real crackdown comes then it will become apparent what the meddling of the western media has caused in Iran. Can commentators still remember Zimbabwe? Burma? Unfortunately the log still sticks from our eyes

One is evil, and represents hate, anger, arrogance, intolerance, and superiority . The other is good, and represents joy, peace, love, tolerance, understanding, humility, kindness, empathy, generosity, and compassion. "

The grandson then asked: "Which wolf will win?" The old man replied simply: "The one you feed.’’

Nice, but I defer to another philosophy. Vassili Zaitsev. The shot he missed drove him on to win a war.

I'm surprised the 'know it alls' on the Have Your Say forum aren't running countries.

Here's the reality of life:

No matter what the laws are, no matter what the rules are, a person wanting to do harm to you will.

There is no such thing as safety.

Sleep tight.

Here is the thing, Obama wrote a letter to leader of Iran before election for starting the talks...... Obama was so soft on Iran turmoil............ is there still anything missing in this puzzle? They didnt want to ruin the possibility of a relation....... That's why this time UK is known guilty for everything, because US was in the list of new friends.......... Mr. President you had a plan, its obvious for everyone now, this was your mistake on middle east. Iraq was Bush's mistake.....

I wish people like you would stop twisting this around to suit your own agenda. This is life and death for the Iranians. You have NEVER had to face what they have.

Have you seen Iranian crowds yelling "Death to America"? Seems to me when a person HAS free speech, it's up to them to speak for those who don't as best they can.
And why is it our guys risking like & limb DEFENDING a democracy never elicit your defense? Your motives are obvious.
