Are you celebrating Armed Forces Day?
Celebrations for the UK's first Armed Forces Day are taking place acroos the UK. Are you celebrating Armed Forces Day?
Thousands are expected to take part in the celebrations intended to thank serving troops, their families and veterans for their contribution.
Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth said it should be "a celebration of the armed forces in all of their glory, not just what they do while they're in service".
Armed Forces Day used to be called Veteran's Day but was changed by the government to raise awareness and appreciation of all those serving in Britain's military.
Are you taking part in any of today's events? Are you a veteran or are you currently serving in the forces? Do you think the armed forces get enough public recognition?

"If it weren't for us you would all be speaking German and would have been picked up by the Gestapo for daring to have an opinion, and no I am not anti German in fact I speak fluent German and loved living there, but £68,000 for a Divorce was a bit OTT, that's why I left.

Until I logged into HYS I'd never heard of it.....
All seems a bit weird that all of a sudden we're getting back to a bit of good old fashioned jingoism, might soon be OK to be English again at this rate....

How would you feel if one of these, so-called, "great troops" had murdered one of *your* family, as they have done in Iraq?
There is nothing to celebrate.
Peter, Ulverston, UK
Peter, unless you experience what they do and live as they do for all our benefit, how can you make such a comment.

Seems it is now fashionable by some to put down our military and use freedom of speech to vociferously describe our armed forces as thuggish murderers rather than an army of democracy.I deplore this trend.
I might remind people that do this that the freedoms that they so eloquently express had to be fought for, often with great personal sacrifice by individuals who loved their country and the citizens of it.

If it wasn't for the troops, this government would be unable to invade sovereign lands. Peter, Ulverston, UK Your not a parent then Peter? If it were not for those volunteers who joined up the governments would simply use Conscription to get their army for war.As a mother I am thankful to those men and women who voluteer. Dont blame troops for Government incompitances, thats exactly how they to get away with stupid decisions they make during their term of office, because of people like you.

I wanted to take part but it was limited to the priviledged few - why not make it a well deserved bank holiday weekend - then we can all take part !!!!

"You're celebrating the freedom to write what you said therefore, the least you can do is thank the troops in WW2 for giving you that freedom!" wrote Legion trevt.
Don't tell people what they should do.
The WW2 troops were fighting to defend our country. However, today, the troops are aggresive, pre-emptive murderers.
Spot the difference?
See why many people just don't agree with you?

"It is shameful when a discredited government uses the greatest armed forces in human history in shady policitical, unethical and illegal ways. ITS NOT THE FORCES FAULT" wrote Martin Callan, London
Rubbish.
It is certainly the solders' fault. He signed-up to be a killing machine, at the behest of the government, to fight any war in any part of the world.
He knew what he was doing when he joined.
If it wasn't for people like him, the government wouldn't be able to murder innocents.

"The people who are serving dont have a choice, they simply follow the orders given to them by those in government" wrote Martin, cambridge
Wrong.
They had a choice. They signed-up, to fight any war in any part of the world, when they joined the armed forces. They knew what they were doing. So, they can't claim that it was thrust upon them, such that we should feel sorry for them.
I blame them for their original (bad) decision to join the murderous gang called the "Armed Forces"

"The soldiers, myself included, have no say in the wars that we are sent to" wrote Matthew Sharkey, Blanefield, United Kingdom
Rubbish. That is the standard troop claim.
I am sure that you had a brain and made the decision for yourself.
You weren't foced to become a soldier. When you joined, you knew that you might be sent to wars, anywhere in the world.
Clearly, you were happy to do that, at the time. So don't say that you had no choice.
