Has Brunstrom been a good chief constable?

Richard Brunstrom, the chief constable of North Wales Police, has sharply divided opinions during his eight years in the job.

As he retires, Mr Brunstrom has again defended his support for the legalisation of drugs and a clampdown on speeding drivers. Such views have landed him the nickname "mad mullah of the traffic Taliban" in parts of the media.

But he says crime in the area has fallen by almost half during his tenure.

What do you think of Mr Brunstrom and his views?
He says he regrets "becoming the story", but do you respect him for putting his head above the parapet, or should he have kept quiet? Should there be more high-profile and outspoken chief constables?

Its easy to concentrate on one part of Policing ie: motorists but all the other criminals were free to roam around unhinderd by North Wales Police due the fact that most of them on orders from this guy were hiding in vans and horse boxes trying to beef up the cofffers of the police force and Government.

50% drop in REPORTED CRIME............ having tried to report several crimes and been fobbed off by our local police I think it's a joke!
They now use phrases like ''it's a civil matter' and 'you need witnesses before we can take a report'' , bring back the bobby on teh beat who actually cared about people, not fly-boys only interested in fast cars and promotions!

The function of the police is to uphold the law as it currently stands. He cetainly did this! But he concentrated too much on the soft targets and sought a high public profile which is not in the remit of a CC. Amature dramatics have no place in policing - "not seen and not heard" is the order of the day. Overall crime statistics prove very little really, it is the types of crime and the reduction of the more serious offences that are most relevent.

High Council Tax increases every year to cover his bloated force, new builidngs, more equipment, higher salaries, gimmicks and general wastefullness.

Plus, he sends me a newspaper extolling the virtues of his force and I, as a taxpayer, am having to pay to read the nonsense !

Glad to see him go.

Is crime down 50% or is reported crime down 50%. A bit difference.
Don't believe a word of it when he says he regrets being the story, he only ever wanted to be the story.
Cannot say good riddence, devil you know etc.

The discontent within his force permeates throughout the public of N Wales. We have suffered the relentless antics of a clown.

My heartfelt thanks to Richard B. on 2 key issues of policing in North Wales. 1. He has totally modernised the attitude of his force to the Welsh Language. What has, for more than a generation, been a barrier between the authorities and a sizable proportion of the population has been largely solved. This should be a permanent legacy. 2. I am in full support of his speeding policies. Cars and m/bikes are lethal weapons - not macho toys. His, at times, non-PC approach was refreshing.

This man is a disgrace to the Police Force and should have retired ages.

Legalise drugs, prosecute speed-merchants and cut crime? Sounds a much better record than some police forces have had.

Careful drivers with exemplary safety records are often caught, for example at 45mph in 40mph limits in empty roadworks. He recognises no distinction between this and genuinely dangerous speeding.

Using horse boxes to disguise the cameras was against Police guidelines. Is he above the law? This criminalising of motorists gives the impression that law is there only to punish the law abiding.

He has energy without perspective. May his successor have both, and be public servant, not master.

Many people dont like this guy, but I appreciate the efforts he went to in preventing the speeding motorist. I hate driving at 30mph in a 30 limit and having an Audi,BMW,Merc or 4x4 right up my tail. I hate driving at 40mph in a 40 limit and having the same tailing me egging you on to hit 50mph instead. Brunstrum helped catch these clowns and even though they are still around at 8-9am every day the deterrent in North Wales at least helped a little. I hope his replacement is even tougher.

If as much time, resources and results were achieved in typical police duties, such as burglary, theft, assault on the individual, as they put on speeding, I am sure we would have more respect for the Police.
Police just goes for the motorists as they are easy targets and make money for the Treasury.
If you are burgled, you have a low chance of seeing your stolen items being returned.

The media always go to town when there is
a major accident on the railways despite the fact that
railways are in fact very safe. However, when a policeman
tries to do something about the appalling number of
deaths on our roads he gets attacked.
It is also completely inconsistent to oppose the legalization of soft drugs and not call for the prohibition of alcohol which kills
thousands every year. Brunstrom was spot on in calling for a consistent drug regulation system to reduce harm.

The concept of a 'North Wales Police' was fatally flawed from its inception, and Brunstrom should have known this, also from day one. I am happy that he is going and I am not alone.

From the western tip of Anglesey to the very edge of Whitchurch, Shropshire and the boundary of Chester City was always much too 'long and thin' to properly manage and maintain contact with the public whom they should serve, except in 'PR' terms, at which Brunstron was adept. The area needs 3 forces.
