Swine Flu
How concerned should I be that non-medically trained staff are advising me about swine flu?

I had swine flu a couple of weeks ago, and seasonal flu last February, and I can assure you the seasonal one was 10 times worse.
I would bet a lot of people will have had swine flu without knowing. It is yet again, media scaremongering, and dare I say, the government using it to distract us from their incompetence.

What is this country coming to?
"The only thing we should fear is fear itself"?
Well Jo public and hooray Henry Press seem to be scared witless by nothing more than a mild flu.

if 2600 people are calling per second that means in 24 hours nearly a quarter of a billion will have called? Not bad for a population of 60 - 70 million!

George Galloway said he thought the government has dealt with the swine flu pandemic 'very well' - how wide of the mark can he be? This system of obtaining the Tamiflu drug is an absolute farce. Any Tom, Dick or Harry claiming to have all the symptons will receive this drug without the blink of an eye. Of course, people are going to order it without really having flu to keep in the medicine cabinet, just in case. What an utter waste of taxpayer's hard-earned money. This Government is inept.

While something clearly needs to be done to ease both peoples' fears and the pressure being put on the medical infrastructure, I do not think that a webform with a few simple questions which lead to an advised response is enough. Just to see what the NHS Direct tells us symptoms of swine flu are, I looked at the 'give us your symptoms' pages last week: I input my hayfever symptoms, and at the end of the questionnaire was told to call 999 for an ambulance........

Interesting that Mr Galloway comments on how unqualified people should not give medical advice, whilst telling people to just take paracetemol and go to bed.

It is very concerning I think that non-medical staff are manning the phones to give advice where swine flu is feared. They mean well but they are not doctors and as a result will not reassure any person worried that they may have swine flu. Any person worried that they may be suffering from swine flu needs to speak to a fully qualified doctor just in case they are suffering from a condition far more serious. This could well be the case which could be fatal if a wrong diagnosis was given.

It isn't the first time beaurocrats do doctors jobs, I have lost track of these petty minded people who have tried to overrule my doctors since I became disabled in 1998, they have made my life a misery by judging my condition without the benefit of a medical degree (please dont mention my name because I will have to endure yet more from these medical misfits)
