How will we know when we have succeeded in Afghanistan?

I think it's like when the US went to Iraq for control of their oil. The UK and probably the US want control of the worlds Heroin of which 90% comes from Afghanistan. I don't believe any of our politicians, and they're sending innocent men and women to risk their life for the gain of Government. War is greed disguised as politics.

I think the people should remember Wilfred Owen's poem 'Dulce Et Decorum Est'. This poet made his feeling known about the lack of proper equipment and his disgust at the way soldiers were being lied to by politicians. The old lie stands to this day.

There is NO justification for our armed forces to be in Afghanistan. None whatsoever! As for Williams comments about a civilian presence be a better option, well they the Politicians have 3 month off so - off you go folks go and get the troops out, we need them more than any Politician of the current breed.

Whether or not you agree with the Principles of the war in Afghanistan, the fact is British troops are loosing their lives there. We should support our troops regardless, and stop bickering over whether we think the war is right or not. British soldiers are in Afghanistan and that is a fact we have to accept, and it is our duty to support them until they get back to Britain safely.

I am horrified at one panel member's suggestion that we are in Afghanistan to liberate its women! My son is serving in Afghanistan with the paras and this muddying of causes of why we are there makes me feel that the whole point is futile and that there are no real reasons that my son and the sons of others are put in harms way. There are many reasons to go to war - saving a small group of women from another culture is not one of them- as today's headlines on the man forced to dink acid prove!

After 911 George Bush and his poodle Blair went after the wrong target: Sadam. If we'd spent a fraction of the men and resources wasted on Iraq sorting out the problem of Afganistan we'd probably (hopefully) be leaving a stable democratic country with respect for women's rights. Instead we've done too little to irradicate the teleban and too much to aggrevate the population. It's a complete mess (like our economy) the result of Blair and Bush. The only light is the sterling work of our soldiers

Sir, It seems obvious to me that the current casualty rate is due to NATOes drive of Al Qaeda toward the Pakistan border whilst the Pakistan army pushes in the opposite direction. This will squeeze the enemy from both directions and cause them to disband. In the meantime, there will be greater casualties on both sides.
