Has Gaddafi been good for Libya?

Colonel Muammar Gaddafi is marking 40 years in power.

His support for various rebel groups in Africa and beyond left Libya an isolated nation.

But as a skilled political operator he brought his country back to the international fold and is due to address the United Nations General Assembly next month.

Would you like him as your president? Is he an inevitable part of Africa's future or a relic of the past. What does the future hold for him and his country?

When I was younger, I loved the thought of a focused individual who had the interest of his country at heart. Getting rid of corruption, bureaucracy, and laxity in the system, etc. I admired Col Gaddafi, for his Revolution ideology and the way he stood against the USA, UK, etc. But now I am older, I believe that “Power Corrupts and absolute Power corrupts absolutely”. Hence, everybody should be held accountable so there is no abuse of power and he is accountable to the people that he rules.

I think he has been good for Libya a Nation that was in need of leadership. The living standard of Libyans is far better than what exists in some western countries, the only difference is that they are Arabs who are also Africans.

The past is past but today Kaddafi is effective for Libya because he could do against the rules laid by US and was able to free the proven terrorist from West. When the time is right, West is ready for everything even if it takes to free the mass murderer. Good justice.

Gaddafi has been as good for Libya as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for Iran, Saddam Hussein for Iraq, Chavez for Venezuela, Kim Jong iL for North Korea and George Bush for the civilized world! Everybody is running around preaching their rotten philosophy except Saddam Hussein as you all know.

Mr.Gadafi is a Libiyan leader. And it is Libyans that determine who should lead them. And they kept quiet for 40 years as he peacefully led them this long with exemplary economic advancment. This is what other African leaders didn't do with their hypocratic democracy.I think Libiyans will endorse him for the rest of his life as far as he stands as he standing now.

Of course he has been good for Libya. The west might not like it but he has given stability to a nation in need. The G D P of Libya rivals that of the western world. The main difference is that they are Arabs who live in the "Continent of Africa"

Seeing him on the news this week for the first time in a long time, I could have mistaken him for Michael Jackson. I think the comparison is more that just about looks. Both live(d) in a dream world.

All accusations of terrorism against Gaddafi come from those who are clearly enemies of Arabs and muslims

Ali Kazmi, Rawalpindi, Pakistan

Talking of Libyans; In 1980 Libya’s Revolutionary council chaired by Gadaffi called for the assassination of Libyan dissidents living abroad. 9 Libyans were murdered in Italy that time. Countless more died mysteriously in many other Euro nations. Either you do not know the meaning of terrorism or your blind defense of “Arab and Moslem” has blinded you.

maurice jamall: How many wars has Libya started?
Ask the Chadians. He invaded four times. Facilitating dictators? Try Idi Amin, Mugabe and Bokassa. And what about arming the IRA, Shining Path and the hand-chopping rebels in Sierra Leone and Liberia? Not to mention financing some of the nastier Palestinian terrorist groups like Black September; they who massacred the Israeli olympic team in 1972.
But then again Gaddafi's not a member of the Republican Party so I guess he can do wrong.

1. How many wars has Libya started?
....
4. How many atom bombs has Libya dropped?
5. How many Libyan soldiers are killing people in Afghanistan and Iraq?

maurice jamall, tokyo

1 supporter of many terrorist orgs. - not in the open of course but well known & documentated.
4 As it hasn't any this is a bit of a silly question.
5 Terrorism & soldiers dont go together.
Soldiers were uniform - terrorists are killers in civilian clothes. & they really dont mind who they kill.

He still supports rebels; he is just smarter at it. He supports Islamic extremists, that is a big problem in Uganda. Help from Gadaffi is like a kiss from Satan. A kiss is a good thing but if it is from the devil himself...don't be fooled, beware the beast.

A good leader.Kenya needs such a leader. Its such individuals that change the stories and destinies of nations. The clout of leaders needed in Africa are hose who will use their discretion to alter the state of economies, change the culture of impunity and instill patriotism.Gadaffi may not be a leadership paragon but if theres a thing he has unquestionably done,he has introduced and maintained political hygiene in Libya,in a continent where political bickering is a substitute for true leadership.
