Should there be a Nato of the South?
The leaders of Libya and Venezuela have called on Africa and South America to create a new alliance to counter Western dominance. What do you think this alliance would achieve?
President Chavez called on the two continents to unite to secure prosperity for future generations, while Libya's Muammar Gaddafi proposed a defence alliance of South American and African nations, calling it "a Nato of the South".
The leaders were speaking at the second South-America-Africa (ASA) summit held in Venezuela where both Col Gaddafi and President Chavez said they wanted to redress the balance of power in the world.
Do you live on either continent? Should links between the two be stronger? What do you think a Nato of the South could achieve? How can the balance of power in the world be redressed?

When you fail in life you'll always look for some one to blame. One can cry in disgust when attempts to develop are made unachievable by someone else. What has Africans done to seek development and how has the west hampered their development affords? For example, when did the west advice the Cameroon president Paul Biya to freely spend state funds on hotel bills while his people die of poverty? Who advices Africans to be too corrupt and what has Gaddaffi said about that? Africans use your heads!

We need NATO of the South now.All countries that are seen as enemies of Western dominance of world affairs should become members. Venezuela,Bolivia,Zimbabwe,Libya,Iran,Myanma r and North Korera are vulnerable to Western machination and plots. When protester dies in stampede in Teheran Obama calls it killing. When a rogue who throws fire bomb on government building in Caracas is put under protective custody Sarkozy calls it detention. NATO of the South shall be a political deterrent against West

Please please please do form this SATO alliance.
That is one geopolitical circus I can't wait to watch.
Could you imagine Ghadaffi, Dinnerjacket and Chavez coming to a consensus on anything besides their hatred for Bush?
It'll be worth it for the speeches alone!

i think that this developing countries of south america and africa should more concentrate on development rather than making alliances that would upset the balance of power in the world and thus make disturbances.

An excellent idea, but, it is like validating the equqtion below.............
""WRONG +WRONG = RIGHT"". ""Chavez + Gaddafi =Uncertainty"".
An impossible alliance that will fail at the very onset. Chevez is sinking his nation into powerty and very uninfluential in his sub-region, while Gaddafi has failed to unite African leaders under his United State of Africa dream.
Infact, they make me laugh; these two adventurers.

NO such accord (NATO of South) shall serve Sovereignty of dependent countries. NATO has fueled prosperity of common European. USA loosing inland all chances of bringing change into life of common man. Education costs are raised to support NATO expenditures. NO NO NO to any alliance that needs armaments. USA has involved huge budget to defend its territories against invisible virtual enemy. FEAR of unknown in US Citizens costs more than any development or social reform. LIVE and LET LIVE

Nato is simply a tool for the US to dominate other nations. Creating a counter-Nato for the South would simply be adding to the problem, and not actively diffuse it. The best thing the global South can do is to resist and counter-act Western right-wing economic policies, so they can develop their economies and improve their standards of living.

Absolute nonsense! First of all, control your own army which kills its own citizens. Chavez and Gadaffi are complete morons who want to build Nato-like army. Who would finance the SATO? At the expense of the starving Africans and South Americans?
Please G_d save us from these jokers!

Im a Honduran citizen living through the worst political crisis as a fresh out of school political analyst for an asian diplomatic mission. The vast majority of the world does not understand that the current situation in Honduras was a direct result of ALBA's expansion in the region. The new constitution had already been written and was set to turn Honduras into a sort of food-for oil protectorate under Chavez's boot. Honduras houses massive untapped oil reservoirs in its caribbean territory.
