Should Rio host the 2016 Games?
Rio de Janeiro has been selected to host the 2016 summer Olympic Games. Is it the right choice?
The International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge announced the results in Copenhagen on Friday.
Football legend Pele and the Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva enthusiastically backed the bid. No South American country has ever hosted the Olympic Games.
Cities in the running were Chicago, Tokyo, and Madrid. Despite appeals from US President Obama and the First Lady, Chicago was eliminated in the first round, followed by Tokyo. Do you think the right city won the bid? Do you come from the winning city? Do you live in one of the shortlisted cities? Have you competed in an Olympic Games?

Anyone can ask for it - and it is up to the Olympics committee to decide. If they are so stupid to give it to a city where poverty is rife, drugs are the main business, then it is their responsibility.

Good luck to Rio,nice city,I once took part in the Cape(Town)to Rio yacht race, friendly place,Chicagoans should not be to upset, although they spent over 60million dollars on their bid,I'm here in Paris and was real happy that London got the games, the money we saved was used elsewhere

Why not? I noticed the many letters on HYS just after London won decrying the huge cost to the british taxpayer and londoners in particular. There were many voices wishing Paris had won. How long before the Brazilians wake up to the cost implications?

I personally believe that all the cities have what it takes to host the games. Just for the fact that Rio has never hosted it I strongly believe now is their time to get it. Rio is a beautiful city with very friendly people. So i see no reason why this issue should even be debated.

The IOC has blacked its own eye with its treatment of Chicago. Rio may have been the best choice, but that is no longer the issue. The issue is the IOC and its treatment of Chicago.

The very word "RIO" connotes physicality, health, integration, sunshine & athleticism. 'Chicago' connotes greed, fatness, racial divide & corruption. The Obama twins backfired, talking about their grandparents or racial struggle; HELLO! Brazil also had slavery.

There is a some serious hate out there for the US and Chicago, which I can guarantee that most you have never set foot in our country or in Chicago for that matter. Yes our cities have crime, but so does everywhere else, don't act like a tourist and you won't be treated like one. I bet if any of you spent one day in America you would realize why so many of your fellow countrymen live here! Good for Rio, great city that I'm sure most of you will never visit because of your preconceived notions.

Good luck to 'em But the country that gets the games is decided more by political expidiancey than what is good for sport. The London olympics is so wrapped up in politics that that it has took on a feel more akin to the recent revolution aniversary "celebrations" in Bejing.

Rio is in South of the Americas and the first country down there to get it I bet they do a good job and the music will be good as well and sun burnt healthy looking people I do think that it should be in Greece and stay there everyone can get to it then but Rio will be fine the rich will get richer and the poor will like other poor get poorer then the country will be left in debt with stadiums that never get used welcome to the con.

People in Chicago are already getting over their Olympic bid loss with a sense of humor. Seen: "My mayor went to Copenhagen and all he got was this STINKIN T SHIRT". Or my favorite: "We're not second anymore we're NUMBER #4". The intial shock of defeat has worn off and the city is getting on with its life.

Here we go again. All those who have posted derogatory comments on Brazil are obviously armchair travellers and have never set foot on Brazilian soil.
I have lived in Brazil for 2 years and will be retuning there for good at the end of the month.
Rio is no more dangerous as Glasgow Brixton or Manchester. The Brazilian people are more hospitable and friendly as any place in the World.
As the saying goes if you haven't tried it then "DON'T KNOCK IT" GO RIO GO !!

Of course. The Olympics cannot be monopolized by a few. The party mood of Brazilians will make it a unique experience to visitors. Let's hope that the paralympics are given more proeminance.

I agree with Tony - Stupid Question! It's the IOC's decision after reviewing all the bids, or is the BBC implying some sort of "foul play" is involved?
It's about time the Olympics went to South America, good on 'em.
As to the Chicago bid, well the US has had the games twice in twenty years, it seems a little greedy for another US city after LA and Atlanta.
Good luck Rio - should be a good party that's for sure - for once I'm looking forward to the openning ceremony!
