What do you think of Obama's Nobel Prize?

US President Barack Obama has won the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009. Is he a worthy winner?

The Nobel Committee hailed Mr Obama's "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples", citing his work to rid the world of nuclear weapons.

Mr Obama said that he was "surprised and deeply humbled" by the award and that he did not feel he deserved to be in the company of some of the "transformative figures" who had previously received the award.

The US President was chosen ahead of the likes of Morgan Tsvangirai, Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, who had been a favourite for the award.

Is Barack Obama the right choice for the Nobel Peace Prize? If not, who would you have chosen? Send us your comments.

I was shocked for sure but it's nice to see others support his efforts. I do caution the world to not expect miracles from one man. There will never be peace in the Middle East - never. Humans that are as angry as those people are will never reach peace. All we can expect as humans is that more angry people will try to kill all that is good in the world. All we can do is keep moving in the right direction.

Perhaps the Nobel committee awarded Obama the Peace prize for his initial determination to stand up against the Zionist lobby in the United States when he came out early in his administration against further Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank. Of course, he eventually buckled - which might have less to say about the character of the man and more about the strength of the lobby.

Another example how this is a political body that blesses all things far left. Obama has not done anything yet but give speeches and send the US spiralling into massive debt.
Another example of Nobel prizes left leanings: look at the economic winners. Both are leftist and the woman was preaching about communities owning land instead of individuals. The US became great partly because of the concept of private property and the righ to own land.

Anyway, Arrafat's win took away all credibility

It has without doubt to me been devalued.

rather prez obama has been devalued by this joke. to be honest nobel peace prize is nothing but a gimmick of some grumpy old people in northern europe who think the world yearns for their approval. maybe it was so in old days...not in the new world order. i will not recommend them for Sanity Prize.

This award is in recognition of achieving somthing great for peace, he has yet to achieve it and earn that recogniotion.

I would have awarded it to Michael jackson as a postimous award for uniting so many millions of people of all races and creeds together through his music.

Now thats what I call an achioevment.dedicated to peace!

Do you know the word of OBAMAJORITY?

This is created by a mayor of Hiroshima and he used this word in 2009 Hiroshima Peace Declaration. Apparently, he expected that Mr Obama would be awarded 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.

I'm sure that a majority of people in the world support Obama's nuclear free world ambition.

All that happened is that the utopian delusions of a couple hippies kicked in and they figured they'd try, yet again, to push a reality that is, sadly, a million miles from reality.

Obama got this prize for TALKING ABOUT nuclear disarmament. In reality, nuclear disarmament is a advanced case fo the delusion that makes people support gun control. The bad guys will always have guns and nukes. Destroying those used for defense is the same as genocide. The whole deal is one big fat joke.

He should be awarded the prize on actual merit not for any potential or possible future deeds.

They made the same mistake by awarding it to Arafat,.remember what happend after he got it.

Obama is a good man and popular, but he needs to prove himself as a worthy recipient and President for that matter first.

The Nobel prize is awarded by a small group of Norwegian political appointees. It is hardly a broad based independent group of 'wise men'.
It is clear that the awarding of this prize was driven by an overwhelming emotional response to the fact that Obama is essentially 'anyone other than Bush' and the ecstacy arising from the stark contrast between a Dark Ages war monger and a real Enlightenment figure dedicated to Peace and dialogue. I sympathise with them, though disagree with their decision.

To America was last to join & Wake Up Hiroshima/Nagasaki

How you are ironic...
Don't you support 'Nuclear Free World'???
You are so political person.

Honestly, for Hiroshima-Nagasaki, political point of view is meaningless, but they care humanism and morality; therefore, they support Obama's Prague speech and his Nobel Peace Prize.

Actions speak louder than words. And to date Mr Obama has not delivered much action.

Whilst an elequent and captivating speaker he presidency has otherwise been very plain.

The Nobel committe have seemingly surcumbed to the PC hype. A sad day for the pre-eminent award in human endevour. Now its just a glorified Oscar.

First, it was very disingenuous for the Nobel Committee to say that they gave him the award for his change in foriegn policy and its potential because he was nominated just 12 days into his administration! Based on that, I would say that he was awarded the Peace Prize simply for being elected. It's too bad because there were more than 200 others nominated and I'm sure that one of them was deserving of the prize and was robbed for political reasons!
