What's so funny about British comedy?
Forty years since the start of Monty Python and the original cast have received a BAFTA Lifetime Achievement award. What makes the British sense of humour so appealing?
On Thursday John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin and a cardboard cut out of Graham Chapman, who died in 1989, gathered in Manhattan, where the group received the accolade to celebrate their "outstanding contribution to film and television".
A new documentary chronicling the life of Python has also been released in the United States to mark the anniversary. The film uses six hours of footage to describe where the comedy troop came from and is due to be shown in instalments.
Why do Monty Python sketches still make people laugh? Is there a specific tone or presentation that is associated with British comedy? What are your favourite British comedy acts? Do you have a favourite Monty Python line or sketch?

it's simply worldwide recognised because it's abnormally funny and so well acted it's impossible to stop laughing. MP inaugurated a style later on evolved in other great acts like the League of Gentlemen (recently with Psychoville) that still today kill us laughing, but also Mr Bean is very much loved abroad as well. Grotesque, unpredictable, irreverent, sometimes sexy, british comedy is unique. My fav MP sketch remains the dead parrot and I sometimes do the silly walk! :)

Is it funny that British & American soldiers kill people in Afghanistan and Iraq every day? Is it funny to stop poor people from entering Britain to take advantage of conditions here to improve their lives? Britain is arrogant and decadent and the last decade has begun an irreversible decline, for which the world must be thankful. "Humour" is misplaced.

The biggest joke is that we allowed people like you into our arrogant and decadent country.

My 14 year old son was just saying the other day how funny Monty Python is:
"The Knights who say "NI"" (in a high pitched voice) "The killer bunny that ate people that could only be killed by the holy hand grenade" "Horseless riders who use coconuts for sound effect"
My personal favorite British comedy is "Faulty Towers" with Basil and his crew. That crazed look in Basil's eyes when he jumped to conclusions about a guest-priceless!

Am I the comedy? Is my parents the comedy? Is my brother the comedy? Is my neighbour at number 13 the comedy? Is it the rest of my neighbours in Cleaside Avenue a comedy?
Am I a forward or backward comedy?
Do I want to rewind my comedy and see it all again?
Do I want to fast forward my comedy and unwrap my mothers Christmas Presents for her to keep on guessing what she doesn't want?
Can she see into a crystal ball full of water on her birthday?
Is my Barclays Bank a comedy?

Our ability to see the humerous side to things is pretty unique. We have never been afraid to laugh at stereotypes. The ability to bring things into perspective is important. I think our use of humour was, and is, much better than being angry. We gently chide ourselves with humour and use it to bring us down to earth and to stop taking ourselves too seriously. I always loved "The Life of Brian"; but current comedy like "Harry and Paul, Catherine Tate, and Eddie Izzard are also brilliant.

what other country could have produced stuff like Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Not The 9 o'clock News, Young Ones, Blackadder, Bottom, Vic Reeves, Alan Partridge and The Office?
When you look at US drivel like Friends it makes one proud to be British.

comedy seems to be dead nowadays, all we have left is the tv tax rubbish on bbc3 (family guy the exception)
weve just lost our sense of humour, too worried to offend, all quick to jump on the slightest tiny hint of a racist word, but forget that even the legendslike ronnie barker had a tiny bit racism on the go

There was a time you could take the rise out of professions, class etc as Python did.
Python is still funny because the humour is what people really think about certain people in various situations.
Alas today, PC has killed comedy. The govt want us all to be mindless drones.

"I recently returned from Turkey from my annual holiday, and the amount of Turks who kept saying 'Loverly Jubberly' and 'Awright Marlene' just drove me insane." Maggie Jones, Cheltenham
Don't go on a Nile cruiser then. Besides the above you'll get "Asda price!", and a full rendition of "Row, row, row the boat" along with other old music hall classics.
