Is immigration a problem?
Gordon Brown has promised to "tighten" the UK's immigration rules by reducing the number of professions which can recruit from outside Europe. Is this the right policy?
The prime minister said these changes would ensure net migration continues to fall while maintaining "flexibility". He added that people who voice concern over immigration levels should not be branded "racists".
The Conservatives dismissed Mr Brown's proposals as mere "rhetoric", while Home Secretary Alan Johnson has admitted that the government has taken "a long time" to deal properly with the issue.
Are you an immigrant worker? Are you planning to come to the UK? Does your company rely on immigrant workers? How will these changes affect you? Should the points system be tightened up? Which professions should be allowed to recruit outside Europe?

Quite brave of Labour to come up with this now. The feeble Tories haven't dared touching this with a barge pole...

Oh dear, you only need to look at all the contradictory comments on this HYS from the anti-immigration lobby to seen how urban myths on immigration are perpetuated. All sorts of wierd and wonderful statistics are bounded about 'prooving' immigrants are to blame for all our ills (NHS, Education, jobs etc).
If you search hard enough for a piece of 'evidence' that suits your own opinions you will find it, especially with the help of the internet...but it doesn't make it fact.

England and the western world have been taken advantage of by continually backing down from the loud, noisy, "politically correct" human rights extremists, always spouting off about what is right for the world, and if you disagree, you are either a racist or an idiot (so much for our right to free speech). Many of the immigrants that have come to the west do not respect our freedoms and rights, and are the real racists. How come the "politically correct" never challenge them?

Well, it would seem that it hasn't been a problem at all right up to this very moment but now is all of a sudden.

Immigrants do not 'do the job that other won't do'. It's just that the pay system is completely topsy-turvy. If you want people to do undesirable work then you pay them accordingly and they will do it.
Stop paying people fantastically huge wages for relatively luxurious work and we'll become a nation like we used to be, proud of our work, our spirit and our culture.
Nowadays I'm just ashamed to be British.

They have brought with them many ailments and illnesses which had been eradicated from Europe almost 50 years ago." This sounds incredibly close to 1930's Nazi rhetoric. I thought this had been eradicated from Europe about 50 or 60 years ago.
Yes but it is true - Typhus, tuberculosis and diptheria are all too common these days in the mainstay of Europe and such illnesses only started appearing en masse during the last 10 years that is, during the period when immigration is at its highest.

immigration is not a problem... it's a symptom of the disease of poverty.. and these measure will only attend to immigration from outside the EU and as we all know the biggest migration ever has occurred from the former eastern block countries; from within the EU. so it will address nothing. If the government is really serious about addressing immigration it will stop turning foreign states (i.e Iraq and Afganistan) into failed states and people overseas won't feel the need to escape so strongly

Very interesting to read the comments - I would say that over 80% are trying to write what they dare not say. That in itself proves the point that the people of real heritage have a sinking feeling about their country

What people seem to forget is that we are an island and that at some point we are going to run out of space and resources. Out culture is being diluted and anytime somebody raises this they are called racist. It may be too late now for the three main parties to start coming out of the state of denial about immigration. Its not alright were not all living together in perfect harmony and pretty soon the lid is going to below

The biggest mistake that Europe will possibly ever make will be to allow Turkey into the EU. If Turkey, which is not in Europe anyway neither geographically or culturally, is allowed into Europe and the EU, you can kiss Europe and a civilised one at that goodbye for ever. The next world war will start if Turkey is allowed to enter into Europe and the EU.Turkey will be the Achilles heel of Europe, but ministers, politicians and businessmen are all too busy about how they can get richer and fatter

If Gordon Brown wants to defeat the BNP he had better start copying their policies and get tougher on immigration and crime for starters.

The result in Scotland where BNP almost beat the conservatives is food for thought. The question of immigration is to my mind brought 20 years too late. But there again Brown has been perfect in closing the door after the horse bolted over the horizon. Bringing this issue up is just a gimmick to get immigrant votes come election time. I am sure he would ask for prisoners to vote privided they ticked the labour box. Come on Brown - we know you by now.

The only reason immigration should be stopped is because our little island is full and due to continuous immigration and thus the increase in our carbon footprint we will enjoy massive fines by the EU for not reducing our carbon emissions thus wiping out any economic benefits.
