What can Obama achieve on Asian tour?

Barack Obama, on his first trip to China as US president, has said that individual rights and freedoms should be available to all. Do you agree?

Speaking to an audience of Chinese students in Shanghai, he said that certain freedoms were universal and not just limited to Americans.

He has now arrived in the Chinese capital, Beijing, for talks with President Hu Jintao.

Mr Obama is on his first tour of the continent as US president. He has visited Japan and Singapore, and is scheduled to travel to South Korea after leaving China.

What do you hope to see Mr Obama achieve on his visit to Asia? How important is the trip? What issues do you think he should address on the tour?

As China becomes more powerful, we will be doing more and more business with them. With Obama highlighting the many problems that China needs to sort out - many, many human rights abuses, their treatment of Tibet, human trafficking, emissions and pollution - I hope that it will lead to the rest of the world putting more pressure on them to change the way they do things and become a bit more modern and ethical. It is scary to think that China is both hugely powerful and shockingly backwards.

He needs to sort out rights and freedoms in his own country before he starts his next crusade to convert the rest of the world.

Very little.

China's 1 child policy has resulted in over 400 million LESS people being added to it's population.

If it's population had grown by that extra amount then China would be VERY different today. Those Chinese who have food in their bellys &living standards improving only do so because China has coped with it's population increase.

The world needs to take note. Without population sustainability, it doesnt matter what freedoms you have if you're starving, ie Pakistan & India etc

Freedom to invade other country, for example?

Irrespective of the systems of governments, the point has to be made that the leaders who finally emerge from whichever system do not truly reflect the majority aspirations of their peoples: who would have thought that Tony Blair in the UK & G. Bush Jnr. in the US have attracted such oppobrium as war criminals in their own countries & abroad wheras China, often derided as a monster authoritarian country, has produced a benign leader as Hu Jin Tao.

Obama deep bow shows how to respect others cultures and traditions......we can't be ignorance of culture and tradition of others as we expected others to respect our point of views.

Mr Barrack Obama is a very good person who is doing excellent job. This visit will be very fruitful and pave the way for brilliant co-operation between nations. There should be many more visit like this to guide the nations on how to maintain good relations. Thank you Mr Obama, thanks a lot BBC for raising this important topic for debate. There should be many more discussion on what are the good works being done by Mr Obama which is still unrecognized.

President Obama will achieve (Bleep!) of speech, (Bleep!) of Suu Kyi's imprisonment, recognition of (Bleep!) Tibet and many other policies aimed at improving ties between the US and China - As reported by the free press of the great Democratic Republic of China.

(ps. He will also move into platinum status on air miles.)

Obama is a human being, NOT Superman.
Hopefully he will hold out the hand to improve relations, which benefits everyone, whether its the economy, freeing the legitimate leader of Burma from house arrest, or making China a more open nation.
I trust he makes a better job than Bush, but that should not be too difficult.

Obama would achieve agreement on all fronts, except currency rates and greenhouse targets, becoz the agreement is drafted by the Chinese side. Maybe Obama is so obsessed with Forbidden Palace or the Great Wall that he forgot to mention these cruicial isssues.

Obama is aware that the Chinese will soon be the major power in the world. He's not showing weakness, weak people throw their weight around and critise others. The strong listen. Surely we want China and US to co-operate .Obama knows he will achieve far more and be listened to by showing respect. The Chinese have come a long way, how they run their country is nothing to do with others. All political systems have their strengths and weaknesses, interfering causes war and conflict do we want that

So much understandable bitterness posted around this HYS question.
However, when Mr Obama was elected I cried with relief that America voted for a mixed-race Democrat! I'm English and felt powerless at everything Bush dragged us into. My hope is that this US President has not only the education, but the emotional intelligence to build bridges broken by others not in the West's name?

I find it funny how people (espcially the Chinese) are trying to justify the crimes of the Chinese government by saying, "Well, America does it." The imperialist crimes of the American government should be no justification for the oppression that the Chinese government carries out. Anybody who actually cares about human rights would condemn both countries for their human rights failures, not make some silly childish comment that equates to, "MOMMY HE GOT CANDY, WHY CAN'T I?" Grow up, people.

From where the chinese have come from and where, without human rights they are today, they will view the Presidents remarks with a benign kindly smile. Two hundred years form now, an unknown faceless chinese mandarin will make a small statement from the bottom of a last page on a massive agenda , "We note President Obama`s remarks on Human rights, and will forward this on for further thought, adding decisions on such matters cannot be rushed". All adjourn for another 4 years.
