Can a deal between China and the US work?

US President Barack Obama has met Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on the last day of his visit to the rising Asian powerhouse. What is the outcome of his visit?

Mr Obama said the US and China were moving beyond a relationship based on trade and the economy, to one encompassing the climate and international security, while Mr Wen said dialogue was better than confrontation.

The US president, who is on a week-long tour of East Asia, is expected to focus on North Korea's nuclear ambitions during talks in Seoul.

What problems should the two nations tackle? How effective will the deal between the US and China be? What challenges lie ahead?

USA is in debt to China by over $2 TRILLION.

China has recently, while most western governments & businesses were in panic mode, gone round & bought up 100% control of particular mining interests and massive % in other mining interests.

These mining interests include most of the metals used & needed on a daily basis, as well as VERY very rare metals needed for hydrogen cars & other hi tech applications.

Now tell me WHO will benefit most from ANY deal.

Answer: Not USA

Such a huge country - as long as Tibet and Uighuria (East Turkestan) are still parts of it- so many people, and hardly any comments from Chinese private citizens.

Could it have something to do with Great Firewall of China?

China holds a tremendous trade surplus,
[Politicalobservor]

Until U.S. market closes to cheap, undervalued Chinese goods.

And where, pray, will they dump their junk next?

Not in EU, which is already considering protectionist measures in order to save its own industrial base.

Not in India, which can produce less junky things herself for less.

So what remains? Africa?

With its huge purchasing power? ;-)

we are heading towards a new era of redefined international relaof tions; it does not seem as though the china-united states deal alone, struck in time or not, matters above all else that constitutes the unsteady and shaky foundation of global international order;

in principle president obama is clear-headed and resourceful enough to strike an acceptable deal with chinese couterpart; but that deal can only minimally serve for a short time, if it is only a matter of bilateral affairs

Isn't it obvious now that like the left wing government we have suffered in the UK for 12 years, Obama will not actually achieve anything?

"I would only think of trading with China if there was some kind of quality control put on the products they sell us..."

You don't know the fact that they were Made in China in the factories mostly owned by the western companies who loose the quality control for bigger profits, and lack of work ethics related to safety, health care, maternity, warefare, pension, ...

The wealthier China becomes the less it will want it's status quo upset by countries like North Korea and Iran. China now knows it's wealth lies in manufacturing and trading with the world. It will be in it's own interests to influence "rogue" states from upsetting this apple cart. This can only be good for the rest of the world.

In my humble opinion the $ is just waste paper, the western nations are trying to hide that we are all bankrupt. We're still just lucky that the Chinese have a lot of that waste paper and are trying to get the most of it (as long as the realitiy has not come to the mind of the Western citizens): raw materials, know how, factories a.s.o.Let's hope that our bubble of wealth will last for some more years and the US can convince the Chinese not to burst our bubble now. That's the current deal.

That's true, except humans and nations have free will to change and can make choices, leopard's don't.

When we are busy posting comment here, most people in China are working hard to achieve their goals. My father own a furniture shop in Hong Kong, for the last 40 years, he only took 3 days off per year as holiday. Now he is 69 years old and still go to work from 10am to 7pm. That's the reason why China have $1.3 Trillion in foreign reserve compare to $14 Trillion in foreign debt in the US.

I rather appreciate it that our current president offers an open hand rather than a closed fist to the world at large.

I wondering why a country with $14 Trillion in foreign debt can still be regards as a super power? How could the US repay all it's debt? My major is in accounting !

The deal between the US and China can work only if it can deal with the basic problem of common people and ppeople living with poverty.
