Should police visit every crime victim?

Police should visit every victim of crime in England and Wales no matter how minor the offence, the home secretary has said. Is this the best use of police time?

Alan Johnson made the call as he launched an advertising campaign outlining what is expected of the police.

The campaign focuses on the "Policing Pledge" which sets out what officers promise to do in their community, and was devised to help improve the public's trust in the criminal justice system.

The Home Office also wants police forces and councils to use websites to name key local convicted criminals.

Should all victims of crime, whatever the offence, receive a visit from the police? Do you think naming and shaming convicted criminals is a good way to tackle crime? What do you expect from the police?

why not issue police with ipod size electronic notepads so that they can type the report as it is given and download to main computer at end of shift meaning less paperwork, less time in nice warm station and more time aiding the public.
You can link it to a clock so that we can see how efficient each officer has been!

The indifference to crime victims on this HYS fits in rather well with the support of torture previously expressed on an earlier HYS by many contributors.

All crime victims suffer insecurity and if a police visit can console the victims it can only improve future policing by returning police officers to the respected ´Friend and Helper´ status of bygone times.

An extra 50,000 pairs of thankful eyes is better for policing and freedom than 50,000 video cameras.

Police can't waste their time to take visit all victims of crime, whatever the offence.Today the numer of criminals is so high that police is not able to guarantee the protection we expect. There is no punishment because I think if one person is bad,he'll be bad for the rest of the life.I don't expect much from the police, just doing their job professionally and mostly they can act in the same way towards everybody. We need policemen much more than we can imagiene.God save the queen.

............and all for the rubbish renumeration she receives ........

She must be a Noddy then? A PCSO, because "real" police are on a fantastic amount compared to what they actually do. I know exactly what three differently ranked officers are paid & it makes your head spin to think about it.

Can we afford the police overtime required in these times of economic strain?
For example, does the police investigation into fraudulent claims by MPs mean that every taxpaying citizen voter can expect a visit from a police officer since we are all the victims of this particular form of theft and/or fraud?

Yes, as long as the criminal pays the costs not the taxpayer.

The fact of the matter is that the taxpayer and the criminal are one and the same person!!

By one definition or another we ALL commit crime and that includes me and you Darrum

After a sustaining an ABH attack a few months ago the Avon and Somerset constabulary visited me to take a statement and offer support within 72 hours. I doubt this would have happened in certain other areas in the country. I guess the assistance you get depends on where you live and local police work loads.

Joint enterprise means anyone who watches knows of or arranges a crime is as guilty as those who commit the crime. This law is being used by the police to lock up as many members of gangs as they can, that being the case why have they not arrested EVERY mp?
After all its a law this lot brought in.

When I was unfortunate enough to live in the UK my home was broken into several times. Police would turn up many hours later obviously just "going through the motions" no interest whatsoever. At one time writing the incident down on a scrap of paper an officer fond in his pocket.

A neighbor's house alarm went off one day. I called the police. Three days later they turned up asking what the problem was. Enough said!

Has the Home Secretary any idea how much it would cost to be able to send a policeman to visit the victim of every crime?
It sounds good but yet again some 'Pie in the Sky' idea which will never be implemented.
He could create a new extremely cheap version of the Police, cheaper than even the pretend police PCSO's and have a crime victim visitor on minimum wage!.
Might do wonders for the unemployent figures.

No, No and No again.. this is where the money should be spent.

Get rid of PCSO's and lets have beat bobbies again.
More admin staff to release officers after arrests.
Bring back Detention Centres.
Bring back Borstals.

More importantly, if parents cannot or cannot be bothered to control their children or know where their kids are, take the kids away and educate the parents about responsibility!!

NO WAY should the police have to visit crime victim! They should be out and about looking for motorist eating apples whilst driving!
I feel that this 'crime' warrent's a far more stringent control! What next? Banana's?

There are a lot of negative comments about the police here on HYS, but they must be doing something right because the prisons are full to bursting!!
Lets get some more prisons built and stop the judges having to let the real criminals off with light sentences.
What about building a massive prison on that vacant anthrax testing island on the west coast of Scotland We'd have our own version of Alcatraz and they wouldn't be able to escape & swim back to the mainland...better than tagging eh?

I'm not sure about the police making every call but what I do think is that the police should do more about such things as domestic desputes and social in-differences.

I don't like the fact that I can't call the police because a person living in my street or next door to me is causing problems, I'm told it is no longer in their control.

I pay for their services, so give me a service please.
