Are we becoming complacent about the risk of Aids?

Speaking on World Aids Day, French first lady and Aids ambassador Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is worried that we are becoming complacent about the infection. What can be done to make people aware of the risks of Aids?

Ms Bruni-Sarkozy said that "the danger is getting used to the HIV problem, and - especially for young people - thinking that because there are medicines, people are maybe not prudent enough".

She said that it is "unfair" that women and children in the developing world often miss out on treatment for HIV.

At present, only about a third of pregnant women in Africa get tested for HIV. And those who have the virus, 45% get the drugs that will stop HIV being passed to their child during birth or breastfeeding.

Do you think the fight against the spread of Aids can be won? What should be done to make people aware of the risks of catching the disease? What could be done to reduce infection rates in the developing world?

Still there is enough to do towars curving the ratio of spread of Aids around the world and for that public awareness campaigns should be included alongwith other reasonable measures.

"For Pete's sake! When will you people get it through your thick heads that AIDS in Africas has nothing to do with Catholicism. The CC is not to blame for people not being able to commit to monogamy.

Phillip de Burgh, London"

What a rude, illogical, dimwitted posting.
Subtext: if you (as many humans) find it hard to "commit to monogamy", AIDS is YOUR PUNISHMENT and Ratzinger can assert falsely that condoms won't protect you. The caring face of religion! What a bunch.

In the UK, more people used to die from sexually transmitted diseases per year, than have in past 20 years in UK from Aids/HIV.

Previously there were no or few remedys or adequate contraceptive protection, hence even with such huge risk, the behaviour of people remained constant, except when there were purifying sermon purges by the church/uk religion as a whole.

Aids/HIV is a growing threat to our species, self-righteous disbeliefs & religious refusal of contraception are worst danger

2ND TRY:

The UN needs to ensure that the governments of those Countries with massive AIDS problems and apparent ignorance about this disease, are forced to enlighten their people and supply condoms etc - via the Aid money they are given.

In the West, AIDS is pretty well understood. However, there should be more care taken with blood-donors and immigration, whereby AIDS are a threat. How many people with AIDS come to live in the UK and are they checked on entry?

AIDS may have come from apes originally but it spread like wild fire from promiscuous homsexuality and now it affects both male and female genders. People may ridicule the notion that AIDS is a punishment from God but all disease is part of the dark side of a fallen human race and we should therefore take care of and respect the temple of our souls. We don't drive with our eyes shut so why go through life with a closed mind concerning spriritual matters?

The thought of aids makes me very nervous especially for those in africa who are vulnerable to the disease because of the amount of poverty they' re facing.Every day millions of people die all over the world because of this dreadful disease and the rest of us are not safe since it' s on the increase and can even be transmitted by cutting yourself with infected cuticle.I hope our leaders would take this very serious.I believe there should be more employment because people need to survive.

Not complacent. Though we are not given all the information we require to make our own minds up.

it is utterly illogical to blame the cathlic church...
They preach non use of condoms and also no sex outside of marriage.
How can you blame the cathlic church because someone chooses to take one half of the advice and agnore the other.
I'm sorry if you don't like the implications of these truths...
Bungalow Bill

People will follow advice they want to follow and disregard advice they don't want to follow. The Catholic Church should reverse its stance on condom use, or it is irresponsible.

The fight against the spread of Aids is futile in both the developing and the developped worlds.
Hundreds of millions of fun tourists are endangered by the risk of catching the HIV, blood transfusion adds same amount of risks, the new borns of infected mothers is another nightmare.
The only hope is for medicine research to find a solid cure . Teaching and guidance will all be forgotten when nature calls. Sex drive is most powerful than any warning.

Complacency is our species middle name. Take a look around at peoples behaviour & complacency is endemic across the whole spectrum of civility & common sense/decency as well as law breaking & non acceptance of self responsibility for just so many issues/subjects.

I think include Aids/HIV, parenting, social skills, basic laws (drinking & anti-social etc) & decency in education curriculum.
Then include it as a seperate education exam. No benefits until you pass it.
Ignorance is NOT an excuse

A large section of society has promiscuous sex - Most of those use condoms to protect themselves. They also go to sexual health clinics for check ups. The people who do not use condoms or go the GUM clinic are the ones doing it on the sly. The people in so called monogamous relationships are the silent ones who do nothing and infect time and time again. These people lie to their partners - These people are the ones that need targeting far more vigorously.

LOL!

What aren't many people complacent about- individual responsibility for climate change, our own drinking & eating habits, cheating in various way, bad driving habits & speeding, democracy &referendum. The list of subjects/issues of human complacency is massive, Aids/HIV is just one of them.

In west/UK, I think as part of education curriculum there should be parts inclusive of Aids/HIV, parenting, socially acceptable behaviour, fail the test, you take it again & again until you pass it

Why combat Aids ?

After all, whenever there is a HYS on the environment a lot of posts recommend reducing world population - Aids seems a good way of achieving that.

If people practiced a more moral way of life, aids would not be the huge problem it is today. Aids is a product of poverty, ignorance, immoral life styles and bad health care. It doesn't help that certain organisations like the 'Catholic Church', and the Muslim Faith are so anti contraception!
